From Chamoli’s Hills to the Global Stage: The Inspiring Journey of Mansi Negi, Uttarakhand’s “Golden Girl”

The story of Indian track and field is increasingly being written by athletes from the country’s most rugged terrains. Leading this charge is Mansi Negi, the powerhouse race walker from Uttarakhand. Affectionately dubbed the “Golden Girl,” Mansi Negi has transitioned from a dominant national junior record holder to an international medalist, embodying the grit, resilience, and raw talent blooming in rural India.

Early Life: Forged on Mountain Roads

Born on May 3, 2003, Mansi hails from Majothi, a remote village in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Her journey to athletic stardom was far from easy. In 2016, she faced a profound personal tragedy with the loss of her father.

Lacking formal training facilities, synthetic tracks, or modern sports equipment in her village, Mansi Negi relied on nature’s own brutal gym. She built her exceptional aerobic base and baseline endurance by training on the steep, rugged, and winding mountain roads of Chamoli. Her undeniable talent eventually caught the attention of scouts, leading her to the Maharana Pratap Sports Academy in Dehradun. There, under the guidance of coach Anup Bisht and with pivotal support from the Himmotthan Society (a Tata Trusts initiative), her raw potential was shaped into world-class skill.

🏆

Major Career Achievements

Mansi Negi has consistently climbed the ranks to solidify her status as one of India’s premier track and field athletes. Her headline career achievements include:

  • FISU World University Games Medalist (2023 & 2025)Clinched consecutive international Bronze medals as a vital member of Team India’s Women’s 20km Race Walk squad in Chengdu, China (2023) and Rhine-Ruhr, Germany (2025).
  • National Under-20 Record Holder (2022)Shattered the Indian national junior record in the 10,000m race walk with a blistering time of 47:30.94 at the 37th National Junior Athletics Championship in Guwahati.
  • All-India Inter-University ChampionSecured the coveted Gold medal in the grueling 20km Walk Race, dominating the university-level circuit.
  • Indian Open Race Walk Comeback (2026)Staged a dramatic senior-level comeback following an injury layoff, fighting back from 10th position to clinch an individual Bronze medal.
🎯

The Blueprint of a Champion: Training & Technique

Race walking is one of the most punishing and technically demanding disciplines in athletics. It requires an athlete to maintain continuous contact with the ground, keeping the advancing leg completely straight from the moment of foot strike until it passes under the body.

Mansi’s training regimen is a masterclass in adaptation:

  • Uphill Stamina: She continues to leverage her mountain roots by using heavy-resistance road walks to build explosive power in her calves, glutes, and lower back.
  • Biomechanical Precision: Under Coach Bisht, she uses video analysis to perfect her stride cadence and eliminate technical faults like “lifting” (losing contact with the ground) or bent-knee violations.
  • Resilience Over Injury: Following a severe hamstring injury that threatened her progress, Mansi Negi overhauled her routine. Her current weekly cycles heavily incorporate deep-tissue physiotherapy, eccentric hamstring loading, and advanced core stabilization to endure the grueling impact of 20km and 35km distances.
