In 1950, the 48th Gorkha Battalion, based in Dehradun, reached the final of a major tournament at Ransi Stadium, Pauri, but lost to Kolkata's famed East Bengal Club. A few years later, in 1953, the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, delivered an impressive performance against Mohun Bagan Club in the Durand Cup final held in Delhi – a result still remembered as one of the high points of the region's footballing history, and one that is often cited as a reason the sport carries such historical weight in Uttarakhand.
