NIT Uttarakhand: Location, Campus & Rankings

The National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand (NIT Uttarakhand or NIT-UK) is a public technical university offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in engineering and allied disciplines. It was established in 2009 as one of ten new National Institutes of Technology set up across India that year, and it admitted its first batch of students in the 2010-11 academic session.

The institute is recognised as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2012 – a status shared by all NITs in India and one that places it alongside the country's most prestigious centrally funded technical institutions.

NIT Uttarakhand is located in Srinagar (Garhwal), in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, situated along National Highway 58 (NH 58). The town of Srinagar sits in the Garhwal Himalayan region, along the banks of the Alaknanda River.

In terms of connectivity, the nearest railway stations are at Rishikesh and Haridwar, while the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located roughly 120 km away. The journey from Rishikesh to the Srinagar campus by road typically takes around 3-4 hours.

NIT Uttarakhand has, since its founding, operated from a temporary campus at the Government Polytechnic (ITI) premises in Srinagar, Garhwal – a facility that was never intended to be permanent, and one that has historically drawn criticism over limited infrastructure.

In 2018, more than a hundred students left the institute in protest over inadequate facilities at the temporary campus, with a batch of students temporarily relocating to the MNIT Jaipur satellite campus. Following government intervention, plans for a dedicated permanent campus were accelerated, and students were called back to Srinagar once construction commitments were confirmed.

The permanent campus of NIT Uttarakhand is being developed at Sumari village, near Srinagar in Pauri Garhwal district. According to an official statement by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry in July 2019, out of a total identified land parcel of 309 acres, approximately 203 acres were earmarked for the initial phase of construction – a figure commonly rounded to around 200 acres in most public reporting.

The foundation stone for the permanent campus was expected to be laid in September 2019, with construction planned across multiple blocks, including an administrative building housing the directorate, registrar's office, deans' offices, and a training and placement cell, among other academic and residential blocks.

Note: As of the most recent available reports, the institute continues to operate from its temporary Srinagar campus while permanent campus construction at Sumari progresses in phases.

NIT Uttarakhand offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes across core engineering disciplines such as Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering, alongside Master of Technology (M.Tech.), M.Arch., M.Plan., and Ph.D. programmes.

• B.Tech. Admissions (Indian students): Since 2013, conducted through JEE Main and JoSAA counselling.
• B.Tech. Admissions (Foreign nationals): Through the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme.
• M.Tech. / M.Arch. / M.Plan. Admissions: Require a valid GATE score, followed by Centralized Counselling (CCMT).
• Ph.D. Admissions: Institute-level entrance test and interview process.

NIT Uttarakhand is ranked annually under the Engineering category of India's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). As a comparatively newer NIT still developing its permanent infrastructure, its NIRF position has fluctuated over recent years rather than showing a consistent upward trend.

Beyond NIRF, the institute has also featured in other ranking frameworks: it placed in the 101-150 band for Architecture in NIRF 2023, ranked #721-730 globally in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, and secured #22 in the “Engineering (Government)” category and #31 in the overall “Engineering” category of the India Today 2025 rankings.

Reported recruiters in recent placement drives have included Flipkart, Publicis Sapient, IBM, Godrej Properties, and MAQ Software, among others, with median packages for B.Tech. graduates in the range of roughly ₹7-9 lakh per annum in recent placement cycles.

Despite the challenges of operating without a permanent campus for over a decade, NIT Uttarakhand has steadily built its academic reputation as one of the state's most significant technical institutions.
