Remembering Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, MVC, the warrior who single-handedly killed 300 Chinese soldiers in Indo-China war in 1962 on his birth anniversary
Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, MVC, was born on 19 August 1941 in Village Baryun, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand.
He served in the 4th Garhwal Rifles and displayed indomitable courage during the Battle of Nuranang in the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
During the 1962 Indo-China War, at the fierce Battle of Nuranang in Arunachal Pradesh, his Commanding Officer ordered a retreat. But Rifleman Rawat, along with two brave comrades Lance Naik Trilok Singh Negi and Gopal Singh Gusain chose to stay back and defend their post against waves of enemy attacks.
For 72 long hours, they held their ground. With the war cry “Badri Vishal Lal ki Jai!”, they charged fiercely at the Chinese soldiers, inflicting heavy casualties and halting their advance. Rifleman Rawat’s unmatched courage and sharp shooting are credited with killing more than 300 enemy soldiers. Even when outnumbered and outgunned, he refused to abandon his motherland.
Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his extraordinary bravery in the Battle of Nuranang. His heroism continues to inspire generations.
Today, his legacy is kept alive at Jaswant Garh War Memorial near Nuranang in Arunachal Pradesh. There, he continues to be remembered as the eternal guardian of our nation.
On his birth anniversary, Uttarakhand Sports Foundation salutes this brave son of Uttarakhand, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, a soldier who became a legend.
It fills me with immense pride that my father also served in the same unit, the 4th Garhwal Rifles, fondly remembered as the Nuranang Battalion where Jaswant Singh Rawat displayed his immortal courage. The brass memento I’m sharing was given to all soldiers of the 4th Garhwal Rifles in 1987, on the Silver Jubilee of the legendary Battle of Nuranang a timeless reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of our Garhwali soldiers.
