The 2011-12 season, in particular, was the standout of his career. Bist finished as the leading run-scorer of the entire Ranji Trophy, amassing 1,034 runs from just 16 innings at an extraordinary average of 86.16, including four centuries along the way. Performances of that calibre don't go unnoticed, and it was this season that earned him a contract with Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, with even senior figures in Indian cricket publicly backing his case for national selection.

What happened next reads less like a cricket story and more like a lesson in how fragile a domestic career can be, even for a proven performer. In late 2013, the Rajasthan Cricket Association was suspended by the BCCI, throwing the team's players into limbo. Bist later spoke candidly about how difficult it became to stay focused on the game amid the uncertainty, admitting that playing for a team under suspension left him without the institutional support he felt he needed to "realise the dream" of an India call-up.

He moved to Himachal Pradesh for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, then returned to Rajasthan in 2017-18, where he even scored 741 runs in the 2018-19 Ranji season. But midway through the 2019-20 season, Rajasthan stripped him of the captaincy and dropped him from the side altogether a decision Bist described at the time as a "betrayal" by the very association he had once helped win two titles.

Rather than hang up his boots after the Rajasthan fallout, Bist kept going, taking his experience to two of India's newer domestic teams. He played for Sikkim in 2020-21, before moving on for one final season to Uttarakhand in 2021-22 closing out his playing career representing one of Indian cricket's youngest state associations, a fitting final chapter for a career built on adapting to new circumstances again and again.

Across a 15-year domestic career spanning Delhi's age-group system and five senior state teams, Bist's numbers add up to one of the more underrated statistical bodies of work in recent Indian domestic cricket.

On 14 January 2023, at the age of 35, Robin Bist officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. It brought the curtain down on a career that, on pure numbers, stacked up against many players who did go on to represent India yet the national call-up never arrived.
