On this 79th Independence Day, we wish every Indian a heartfelt Happy Independence Day. Our freedom came through immense sacrifice, and it is our duty to value and protect it.
Uttarakhand played a significant role in India’s independence. From its hills emerged warriors, thinkers, and leaders whose courage and dedication shaped our nation’s history. These mountains hold stories of bravery and selflessness that must never be forgotten.
Shri Chandra Singh Garhwali
Known as the “Hero of Peshawar,” he refused to fire on unarmed protesters in 1930, defying British orders. His act of humanity became a historic symbol of moral courage against oppression.
Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna
While globally known for the Chipko Movement, his activism was rooted in the fight for people’s rights during and after the freedom struggle. His lifelong mission was to protect India’s environment and rural communities.
Shri Indramani Badoni
Called the “Gandhi of Uttarakhand,” he was deeply involved in grassroots mobilization, advocating for the rights and identity of the hill people even during the freedom era.
Shri Dev Suman
A young revolutionary who fought for the people of Tehri against the oppressive monarchy aligned with British power. He sacrificed his life during a hunger strike, becoming an eternal symbol of resistance.
Shri Kalu Singh Mahara
A lesser-known hero, he organized local resistance in the Kumaon region, inspiring villagers to rise against exploitation and British control.
Shri Badri Datt Pandey
The “Lion of Kumaon,” he played a crucial role in spreading nationalist ideas through journalism and public activism, becoming a voice for the voiceless.
Shri Nagendra Saklani
A fierce revolutionary who laid down his life in 1948 while resisting oppressive princely states in Tehri, ensuring democratic governance reached the hills.
Shri Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna
An influential political leader whose involvement in the freedom struggle shaped his vision for a just and progressive India. He worked tirelessly for social justice and economic equality post-independence.
Shri Govind Ballabh Pant
A key leader from Uttarakhand, he played an active role in the Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience Movements. He inspired political awakening in the hills and was jailed multiple times for opposing British rule.
