Uttarakhandi Social Worker Radha Behan Bhatt Awarded Padma Shri Award
91-year-old Radha Behan Bhatt from Uttarakhand was honored with the Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu – 15th President of Republic of India in New Delhi for her exceptional work in social service, especially in environmental conservation, women empowerment, and girls’ education.
Born in 1933 in Dhurga village, Almora, Radha Behan has been devoted to social service since the age of 16. She joined Lakshmi Ashram in Kausani, founded by Sarla Behn, and embraced Gandhian principles. Over the years, she educated nearly 15,000 children through 25 Bal Mandirs and planted over 1.5 lakh trees. Her involvement in the Chipko Movement (1975) and campaigns against mining and hydro projects brought her national recognition.
Through her grassroots work, she empowered thousands of rural women and improved literacy in remote areas. Her contributions have inspired many to work for nature and society.
