Tribute: Salute to Uttarakhand’s greatest sporting icon, Jaspal Rana Ji

Today, Uttarakhand has not only lost a legendary shooter but also its brightest star in the world of sports.

Olympian shooter, recipient of the Padma Shri, Arjuna Award, and Dronacharya Award, Asian Games gold medalist, and Commonwealth Games champion, Jaspal Rana Ji’s passing is an irreparable loss to the sporting fraternity of Uttarakhand and India.

He passed away during treatment at Max Hospital, Saket, following a heart attack.

Born on June 28, 1976, in a Garhwali family in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, Jaspal Rana Ji embodied discipline, courage, and hard work from a young age. His father, Shri Narayan Singh Rana Ji, was a brave soldier in the 1971 war, served in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and later became Uttarakhand’s first Sports Minister. His father was also his first coach.

From 1994 to 2006, Jaspal Rana Ji won 15 medals at the Commonwealth Games, including 9 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze. The 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester marked the most remarkable milestone of his career.

In the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha, he won three gold medals and one silver medal, bringing immense pride to India and Uttarakhand on the global stage. As an athlete, he made the nation proud, and as a coach, he guided and inspired the next generation.

Jaspal Rana ji’s guidance also played a huge role behind Manu Bhaker’s historic success at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He proved that a great sportsperson doesn’t just win medals, but also teaches future generations to win.

Jaspal Rana ji was one of the biggest names in sports history, not just of Uttarakhand but of the whole of India. He was an inspiration to every youngster who dreams of coming out of the mountains and reaching the biggest stage in the world.

His family has also been deeply involved in sports and public life. His sister Sushma Singh Rana ji, who is also a shooter, is the wife of Noida MLA Pankaj Singh ji. Pankaj Singh is the son of India’s Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh.
