Pushkar Singh Dhami was born on 16 September 1975 in the hill district of Pithoragarh, into an Army family. He pursued his higher education at the University of Lucknow, where he completed his graduation, a Diploma in Public Administration, a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management, and later a Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
His political grounding began early. In 1990, while still a student, he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) the student wing associated with the RSS starting a journey that would eventually take him to the highest political office in his home state.
Political Journey: From Student Leader to Chief Minister

Despite this personal defeat, the BJP retained power in the state, and the party’s MLAs reposed their faith in him, re-electing him as Chief Minister on 23 March 2022 a rare instance in Indian politics of a leader being chosen to head a government despite losing their own constituency seat.
To allow Dhami to enter the Assembly, sitting Champawat MLA Kailash Chandra Gahtori voluntarily resigned his seat. Dhami then contested and won the resulting by-election from Champawat on 31 May 2022 with a landslide margin, going on to formally join the Assembly and cement his position as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term a milestone unmatched by any of his predecessors since Uttarakhand’s formation.
