Why the Mumbai Marathon Is More Than a Race
Every January, while most of Mumbai is still asleep, thousands of runners gather near the city’s historic railway terminus in the dark. A few of them are world-class athletes chasing a podium. Most of them are ordinary people. There are first-time marathoners, office colleagues in matching T-shirts, grandparents in the Senior Citizens’ Run and young people running for a cause they care about.
That mix is what makes the Mumbai Marathon special. It is a serious elite road race and India’s biggest street party at the same time, and it has grown into one of the largest mass-participation sporting events on the continent. The race has also become a huge platform for charity, and it is one of the reasons people call it more than just a sporting event.
A Short History of the Mumbai Marathon
The first race was held in 2004 as the Standard Chartered Mumbai International Marathon, inspired by the London Marathon. About 22,000 people took part in that first edition. Standard Chartered stayed on as title sponsor for 14 years, until 2017, and in 2018 the Tata Group took over the title sponsorship for ten years. Procam International has organised the race throughout.
The event was not held in 2021 and 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it returned on 15 January 2023. The race also introduced the Inspiration Medal in 2018, a medal with two sides, where finishers can dedicate their run to someone who inspired them. In 2026, the marathon completed its 21st edition, which makes the 2027 race the 22nd.
Race Categories and Eligibility for 2027
The Tata Mumbai Marathon has a distance for almost everyone. The official age rules for 2027 are:

Some important rules to remember. A valid timing certificate from a recognised timed race is mandatory for the Marathon and Half Marathon, and it must show your net (chip) time from a race held on or after 17 July 2025. You must submit the certificate at registration, and submitting your latest and fastest one gives you a better start wave on race day. Registration is not allowed on race day. Fees are non-refundable once your entry is confirmed, and you cannot transfer your bib to someone else, because every bib is linked to your registration photo and details.
If you missed the regular registration, there is another route. United Way Mumbai, the official philanthropy partner, has reserved a limited number of places for people who raise funds for a cause. Runners who raise ₹2 lakh from at least five donors by 22 December 2026 qualify as Change Runners, and the top 500 fundraisers who raise ₹10,000 or more from at least five donors by the same date can also apply for a bib, with higher fundraisers getting preference. Places depend on availability, and marathon and half marathon applicants must still meet the timing criteria.
Expo, Bib Collection and Race Day Rules
Marathon, Half Marathon and Open 10K runners must collect their bibs personally from the PLAYSCAPE expo, which runs from Thursday, 14 January to Saturday, 16 January 2027. The expo closes at 5 pm on Saturday, and no bibs will be given out after that. Carry your application confirmation and a government photo ID. In unavoidable cases, a representative can collect the bib of one confirmed runner, but they must carry the runner’s confirmation and ID along with their own ID.
Confirmed Marathon runners receive a race day t-shirt from the sports goods partner ASICS, and Half Marathon runners get a t-shirt from title sponsor Tata Sons. All finishers of the Marathon, Half Marathon and Open 10K receive a finisher medal. Animals and children in pushchairs are not allowed on the course.
The Course: What to Expect on the Road
The elite marathon starts and finishes at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), the heritage railway station in South Mumbai. The 2026 route ran past Flora Fountain and Marine Drive, up Peddar Road to Haji Ali, and then onto the new Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link before returning to South Mumbai. Running along the sea in the early morning is a big reason people call this one of the most scenic races in the country.
It is not a pancake-flat course, though. Route previews for the 2026 race highlighted the Peddar Road climb, the exposed wind on the Sea Link and the humidity that builds as the sun rises. The official 2027 route map has not been published yet, so treat this as a guide to the recent course and check the organisers’ route map before race day.

Records and Past Champions
The race has produced some of the fastest marathons ever run in India. At the Mumbai Marathon 2023, two course records fell. Ethiopia’s Lemi Hayle won the men’s race in 2:07:32, and his compatriot Anchialem Haymanot won the women’s race in 2:24:15. Both are still the course records. Hayle won again in 2024 in 2:07:50.
Ethiopian runners have dominated the winners’ list, with 23 of the 42 men’s and women’s titles between 2004 and 2026 going to Ethiopia and 13 to Kenya. The 2024 and 2025 editions are worth remembering:
- 2024: Lemi Hayle (Ethiopia) won the men’s race in 2:07:50, and Abersh Minsewo (Ethiopia) won the women’s race in 2:26:06.
- 2025: Eritrea’s Berhane Tesfay won the men’s race in 2:11:44, and Kenya’s Joyce Chepkemoi won the women’s race in 2:24:56.
Tata Mumbai Marathon 2026 Results
The 2026 edition was held on 18 January, and it was the 21st edition. Ethiopia’s Tadu Abate Deme won the men’s elite race in 2:09:55, and his compatriot Yeshi Kalayu Chekole won the women’s race in 2:25:13. It was the first major marathon win of her career.
Among Indian runners, Kartik Karkera was the top Indian man in 2:19:55, and Sanjivani Jadhav was the top Indian woman in 2:49:02. It was a strong start to the year for Karkera, who went on to win the New Delhi Marathon the following month.
Elite Field: Qualification, Rewards and Prize Money
The elite marathon has its own registration window, from 5 November to 25 November 2026, and elite runners must be at least 18 years old. To enter as an Indian elite, an athlete must have run a qualifying time between 26 November 2025 and 25 November 2026 in a race recognised by Indian Athletics, and the race must be AIMS-certified or affiliated with World Athletics. The marathon qualifying times are 2:27:30 for men and 3:10:00 for women, and the organisers also accept faster 25 km and half marathon times.
Procam runs a rewards programme called PRIDE (Procam Rewards for Indian Distance Elites) for Indian elites. Athletes are placed in three tiers based on their scores. Tier 1 athletes get a hotel stay, a return air ticket, and an appearance fee of ₹20,000; Tier 2 athletes get a hotel stay and ₹10,000; and Tier 3 athletes get a hotel stay. The 2027 prize money for the elite race has not yet been published on the official site.
What Is the Procam Slam?
The Procam Slam is a challenge for runners who complete the feature race in each of the four Procam running events: the Open 10K at TCS World 10K Bengaluru, the Half Marathon at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, the 25K at the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata, and the Marathon at the Tata Mumbai Marathon. All four races must be completed one after the other, without a break, and within set finish times. The marathon cut-off for the Slam is 6 hours 30 minutes.
Slam finishers get rewards such as a custom running kit, a special medal, a reserved bib number, and an extended registration period. There is also a prize of ₹25,000 for the winner in each age category, for both men and women. Your performance at the 2027 race counts if you are starting a new cycle.
How to Check Results and Download Your Timing Certificate
Provisional results are available by 5 pm on race day. Timing certificates for marathon finishers can be downloaded from the official timing platform, Sports Timing Solutions (sportstimingsolutions.in), about 21 working days after the race. Dream Run participants receive a participation certificate from the same platform about seven working days after the race, while the Senior Citizens’ Run and Champions with Disability categories do not get timing certificates.
Tips for Runners Preparing for the Mumbai Marathon
- Run a build-up race. A half marathon in November or December is a good test of your pace and kit. Our upcoming marathon in Mumbai calendar lists races such as the Jal Suraksha Navi Mumbai Half Marathon on 29 November and the Rotary Queen City Half Marathon on 20 December 2026.
- Train for humidity. Mumbai can be humid even in January, so practise your hydration plan on long runs.
- Do not skip the expo. You cannot get your bib on race day, so pick a bib collection slot early.
- Keep race week simple. Do not try new shoes, food or gear in the last few days.
- Start steady. The crowd and the atmosphere in the first few kilometres are exciting, but the second half is where the marathon is decided.
