Who Is Hosting the 2028 T20 World Cup?
The ICC gave the hosting rights to Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket in November 2021. Both countries love big cricket events, so expect packed stadiums.
Why Australia and New Zealand Make a Strong Host Pair
Australia already knows how to run a global tournament, since it hosted the 2022 edition. New Zealand brings a first-time energy to the event, and its fans are known for backing the game at every level.
The two countries are close neighbours and share a long cricket rivalry. That makes the tournament feel like a regional celebration. Fans can also expect a mix of big city grounds and smaller venues, which gives the event a different feel from past editions.
Where Will the 2028 T20 World Cup Matches Be Played?
The matches will take place in Australia and New Zealand. The ICC has not announced the final stadiums yet.
- Up to 10 venues will host games.
- Fourteen cities have bid to host matches.
- Organizers plan to announce the final list by the end of 2026.
- Reports say the MCG in Melbourne is the top pick for the final. This is not confirmed.
Check back here after the announcement. We will update this section with the full venue list.
Which Teams Have Qualified for 2028?
Twenty teams will play. Twelve already have their spot:
- Hosts: Australia and New Zealand
- From the 2026 Super 8 stage: England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe
- From the T20I rankings: Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Ireland
Eight spots are still open. The best team from each region at the global qualifier moves ahead, along with the next three best teams overall. So a few big names could still miss out.
How Will the 2028 T20 World Cup Work?
The ICC changed the format. The group stage now has five groups of four teams, and the top two from each group move on. This replaces the old Super 8 with a Super 10 stage.
Here is the flow, step by step:
- 20 teams play in five groups of four.
- The top two from each group reach the Super 10 stage.
- The 10 teams split into two groups of five. Each side plays four matches.
- The winner of each Super 10 group goes straight to the semi-final.
- The second and third-placed teams play two cross-pool eliminators.
- The eliminator winners join the semi-finals.
- The semi-final winners meet in the final.
The new setup gives teams a second chance after one bad day. It also adds more high-pressure games.
How Did India Win the 2026 T20 World Cup?
The last edition ran from 7 February to 8 March 2026. India and Sri Lanka co-hosted it.
India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final in Ahmedabad. The match went one way early on.
- India scored 255/5.
- Sanju Samson hit 89 off 46 balls.
- Ishan Kishan made 54, and Abhishek Sharma made 52.
- New Zealand were all out for 159.
- Jasprit Bumrah took 4 wickets for 14 runs.

The win set big records. India became the first team to win back-to-back titles and the first to win at home. It was also their record third title.
Which Teams Can Challenge India in 2028?
India will start as the champions, but the 2028 field looks open. Here are the sides most likely to push them:
- Australia: They won the 2021 title and will play in front of home crowds.
- New Zealand: They reached the 2026 final and will also enjoy home support.
- England: They have won the title twice, in 2010 and 2022.
- West Indies: They are a two-time winner and always dangerous in the shortest format.
Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka have also qualified, so no match will be easy. Conditions in Australia and New Zealand usually help fast bowlers, which could change how teams build their squads.
