India’s First Title: 2007

The first T20 World Cup took place in South Africa in 2007. India sent a young team led by MS Dhoni. Few people gave them a chance.

They surprised everyone. India beat Australia in the semi-final. Then they faced Pakistan in the final.

India scored 157/5. Gautam Gambhir made a fine 75. Pakistan chased hard, but they fell short by five runs. Joginder Sharma bowled the final over, and Misbah-ul-Haq’s shot ended up in Sreesanth’s hands.

That night changed Indian cricket. It also helped launch the IPL a few months later.

India’s Second Title: 2024

India waited 17 years for another trophy. In 2024, the tournament moved to the USA and the West Indies. Rohit Sharma led the side.

India stayed unbeaten all the way to the final. There, they met South Africa in Barbados.

India made 176/7. Virat Kohli top-scored with 76, and Axar Patel added a quick 47. South Africa then fought back. Heinrich Klaasen hit 52 and pushed the game close.

Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya turned it around late. Suryakumar Yadav’s catch at the boundary removed David Miller. India won by seven runs.

India’s Third Title: 2026

The 2026 tournament took place in India and Sri Lanka. India entered as defending champions. They led the field again.

The final was in Ahmedabad against New Zealand. India batted first and scored 255/5. That is the highest total in a T20 World Cup final.

Sanju Samson hit 89 off 46 balls. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan also scored fast fifties. Then Jasprit Bumrah took 4/15 and won Player of the Match. New Zealand finished on 159, and India won by 96 runs.

This win set three records:

  • India became the first team with three T20 World Cup titles.
  • India became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title.
  • India became the first host nation to win the tournament at home, as the BCCI confirmed.

Where Did India Win the T20 World Cup?

India has won in three different countries:

  • South Africa (2007)
  • West Indies (2024)
  • India (2026)

Three different captains led those wins: Dhoni, Rohit and Suryakumar. That shows how deep India’s talent runs.

India’s Other T20 World Cup Results

India did not win every time. Here is how the other years went:

  • 2009, 2010 and 2012: India went out before the semi-finals.
  • 2014: India reached the final but lost to Sri Lanka.
  • 2016: India lost the semi-final to the West Indies in Mumbai.
  • 2021: India went out in the Super 12 stage.
  • 2022: India lost the semi-final to England.

So India’s record before 2024 was patchy. The recent form is far stronger.

A Short History of the T20 World Cup

The ICC launched the tournament in 2007. Since then, six different teams have won it:

  • India: 2007, 2024, 2026
  • England: 2010, 2022
  • West Indies: 2012, 2016
  • Pakistan: 2009
  • Sri Lanka: 2014
  • Australia: 2021

India now leads the list by a clear gap.

Why India’s T20 World Cup Record Matters

The T20 World Cup rewards fearless cricket. India’s rise shows how much the team has changed. Old India played safe. New India attacks from ball one.

Strong bowling helps too. Bumrah has been a key match-winner across the last two titles.
